Rossetti does this to challenge the decidedly patriarchal perception of norms within Victorian culture in terms of sexuality to reconstruct the Christian idea of redemption. Written in loose iambic pentameters, the rising metre often speeds up the pace of the poem. Laura’s desires demand instant satisfaction, through Laura Rossetti portrays women’s basic urges + needs. The immense desire for pleasure is so abundant that she becomes animal like, she conforms to goblin behaviour. Lizzie acts as the conscience, the â€Å"angel on one’s shoulder†. The differences in their behaviour suggest they represent various aspects of the human psyche. Fruit Sinful addiction – Laura is the antithesis of Victorian behaviour. Illusion to Adam and Eve – Laura steps closer to death through her incessant leering for the forbidden fruit. The connotations of forbidden fruit, which is a euphemism for sex. Cousin Kate The narrator is from a humble working family (a â€Å"cottage maiden†). She is seduced by a â€Å"great lord†. AO2 Form + Structure: The poem consists of a quatrain; however it has an ABCB rhyme scheme, stopping it from being a traditional ballad. Dramatic monologue and 1st person narrative – gives a biased view point, which creates sympathy for the narrator. Syntax of the first line allows the reader to focus solely on the narrator. The use of rhetorical questions, expresses the narrators anger and confusion at the experience she has had to endure. Cousin Kate is written in the form of three and four foot iambic trimesters, which allows the poem to be read at speed and enables a more
