small town Revenge A Chain Reaction&nbsp&nbspIn the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the theme of punish isrepeated numerous times throughout the play and involves a great deal ofcharacters. Of these characters, eight are abruptly by the end of the play byresult of murder which was initiated through revenge. Shakespeare uses therevenge theme to constitute conflict among many characters.&nbsp&nbspShakespeare uses the revenge theme to create conflict between Hamlet andClaudius. In Act I, scene 5, Hamlet is visited by the ghost who was hisfather. The ghost makes Hamlet aware of his murderous death when he tellsHamlet of how Claudius had killed him. The ghost says this to Hamletregarding Claudius, "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder." This iswhere Hamlet is first inrtoduced to the revenge plot between himself andClaudius. Hamlet wants to insure that the ghost really was his dead fatherbefore he kills Claudius. To do this Hamlet has people act out the death ofhis father in front of Claudius and declares him guilty by his reaction tothe play. " O good Horatio, Ill take the ghosts word for a thousand pound."Hamlet declares Claudius guilt to Horatio and instantly realizes that he mustinesscontinue on with his revenge plot. The conflict between Hamlet and Claudiusis delayed by Hamlet but does eventually occur in the last scene. Hamlets draw has just died, Hamlet has been sliced by Laertes poison sword, andHamlet has just struck Laertes with a fatal blow when Laertes says that thiswas all brought on by Claudius. Hamlet, now realizing that there is no moretime for him to delay his revenge, stabs Claudus and kills him. Revenge wasthe motive for the conflict between Hamlet and Claudius.&nbsp&nbspShakespeare uses the revenge plot to create conflict between Laertes andHamlet by having Laertes avenge his fathers and sisters death which Hamletis responsible for. After learning of his fathers unnatural death, Hamletdecides th at he can no longer trust anyone, except for Horatio. While actingout his madness, he visited Ophelia and cut off his ties with her because ofhis distrust for everyone. In Act III, when Hamlet talks with his mother, henotices that he is being spied upon. Thinking that it is the king, Hamletmistakingly kills Polonius who was hiding behind a big rug, which for somemedeval reason, was hung on the wall.
